28                                                       SONGS FOR THE NURSERY.
Little Bopeep fell fast asleep,
And dreamt she heard them bleating;
When she awoke, she found it a joke, For still they all were fleeting.
Then up she took her little crook,
Determined for to find them; She found them, iudeed; but it made her heart bleed,
For they'd left their tails behind them.
It happened one day, as Bopeep did stray
Unto a meadow hard by There she espied their tails, side by side,
All hung on a tree to dry.
She heaved a sigh, and wiped her eye,
And over the hillocks she raced; Aud tried what she could, as a shepherdess should,
That each tail should be properly placed.
If I were up there
With you and my friends, I'd rock in it nicely, you'd see;
I'd sit in the middle,
And hold by both ends ; Oh, what a bright cradle 'twould be!
I would call to the stars
To keep out of the way, Lest we should rock over their toes;
Aud then I would rock
Till the dawn of the day, And see where the pretty moon goes.
And there we would stay
In the beautiful skies, And through the bright clouds we would roam;
We would see the sun set,
And see the suu rise, And on the next rainbow come home.
THE NEW MOON.
Mrs. Follen.
Dear mother, how pretty The moon looks to-night!
She was never so cunning before; Her two little horns Are so sharp and so bright,
I hope she'll not grow any more.
MY GOOD-FOR-NOTHING.
Emily Huntington Millek.
" What are you good for, my brave little man ?" Answer that question for me, if you can; You, with your fingers as white as a nun ; You, with vour ringlets as bright as the sun;
